East Berlin’s fascinating story begins in 1764 when John Frankenberger, a Prussian immigrant, purchased 200 acres from the Penn family and laid out a town with 85 lots. He named it “Berlin” after his hometown in Prussia, now Germany. The town flourished as German, Irish, Dutch, and Quaker settlers established farms and businesses throughout Adams County.
The East Berlin Railroad, completed in 1877, transformed the community from a quiet agricultural settlement into a bustling commercial center.
